It’s no secret that podcasts have grown massively over the past few years. They seem to be everywhere, popping up left, right and centre. But it’s worth asking, what’s actually driving that growth? What’s the real appeal? And more importantly, are podcasts just a passing trend, or something much more established? Well, let me tell you why podcasts have taken off, what’s behind their staying power, and why they’re not going anywhere anytime soon!
The Appeal of Podcasts
Platforms that once treated podcasts as an afterthought are now actively competing for exclusive shows, and some of the biggest names in media are now taking podcasts seriously:
Netflix have begun their first real push into podcasting, starting with sports led content.
The Golden Globes recently introduced its first ever Best Podcast award, won by Good Hang With Amy Poehler.
That’s a big shift, and it tells you everything you need to know about where things are heading.
Podcasts aren’t just something you throw on during your commute anymore (although that’s still a huge part of it). They’ve evolved into full-scale media channels. They’re being developed, branded and marketed in the same way as TV shows, because, in many ways, they function like them.
What makes podcasts so powerful is their flexibility. Whether it’s an individual interviewing a public figure, a small business building its brand, or a corporate team creating content, there’s space for it. The format works because it’s accessible, personal and scalable.
“Isn’t The Market Saturated?”
It’s a fair question, and on the surface, it can feel that way.
But the reality is a bit different. A lot of podcasts don’t fail because the space is overcrowded, they fail because there’s no plan behind them. A few episodes go out, momentum drops, and the project fades.
Podcasting might look simple, but doing it well takes direction. Not a script, but a clear idea of:
- Where the podcast is heading
- Who it’s for
- How it’s distributed
- How it’s going to grow
Consistency and purpose are what separate the podcasts that stick from the ones that don’t, as well as having high quality visuals to go with it.
Why Podcasts Are Here to Stay
What we’re seeing now isn’t a trend, it’s a shift in how people consume content.
Now the short form bubble has burst slightly, audiences are moving towards long form, on-demand, personality driven media. They want depth, authenticity and connection, things that podcasts naturally deliver. Unlike short form content, podcasts give people a reason to stay, return, and build a relationship with a brand or voice over time.
From a business perspective, that’s incredibly valuable.
From Our Side of the Studio
Working in a podcast studio, I see this first hand. There’s something great about those early episodes, when people are still finding their voice, working things out, and building confidence.
And then, when it clicks, when the content starts landing and finding its audience, you can see the shift. That’s when a podcast stops being an idea and becomes something real.
There’s a quote that sums it up perfectly:
“The barrier to entry is low, but the ceiling is high.”
Anyone can start a podcast. But building one that lasts and actually delivers value, is where the real opportunity lies.
