Designer Kitchen Direct

About

Designer Kitchens Direct are a multi-award-winning kitchen manufacturer based in Sheffield. For over 40 years, this family-owned business has specialised in offering the full-suite design, manufacturing and installation of luxury, made-to-measure kitchens. They combine traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation and promote their values of customer service to position themselves as a premier and trusted choice within the local market.

The Challenge

In the world of bespoke kitchens, there is no such thing as an “impulse buy.” A custom kitchen is a lifetime investment, requiring a significant financial commitment and weeks, if not months, of research.

In luxury retail, customers often spend this time comparing competitors, researching, and gathering information before even speaking to a designer. This significantly increases the chances of lost leads for businesses like DKD.

We needed to develop and implement a digital strategy that could capture early-stage interest, maintain ‘top-of-mind’ awareness, justify their value proposition and build trust.

The Solution

We created a brochure-led nurture funnel that moved away from generic ‘sign up for updates’ prompts and implemented a multi-layered strategy within Mailchimp, centred on inspiration and authority. This strategy had four main pillars;

#1 List Growth

We needed to ensure that we saw a consistent stream of new leads. To do this, we looked at two primary channels. Firstly, we built tailored website pop-ups to capture organic and paid traffic without affecting the user experience. Secondly, we leveraged high-performing social creatives to drive users to dedicated lead form pages across the website. By utilising these two channels, we scaled DKD’s database by 393%.

#2 The Lead Magnet

Rather than relying on promotional or seasonal offers as our lead magnet, which often attract price-sensitive customers, we opted for a value-led lead magnet. Designed in-house by Unit Digital, the digital brochure was made to mirror the luxury and craftsmanship of a physical DKD kitchen. This ensured that the brand’s premium positioning was established at the very first touchpoint. By providing a high-quality visual tool, we moved away from “selling” and toward “inspiring.”

This approach not only allowed us to increase the volume of leads but also to qualify them. A user willing to exchange their data for a style guide is signalling a deeper level of resonance. We were also aligning the brochure with the customer’s mindset of ‘research and planning’.

Implementing the brochure as a lead magnet generated a 70% open rate and 22% click rate.

#3 Automated Flows

Once we’d captured a new browser with an expressed interest in the brand, we designed an automated nurture sequence that reinforced DKD’s value proposition. The first email delivered the brochure instantly, achieving a staggering 70% open rate. Subsequent emails focused on sustainability, quality, and craftsmanship, ending with “Style Guides” to re-spark imagination for those nearing a purchase decision.

Unlike the industry average, where engagement typically drops by 50% after the first touchpoint, our sequence maintained a 67% open rate even by the fifth email.

Once users had expressed an interest in the brand and requested the brochure, they began an automated welcome flow, designed to ‘nurture’ them as we reinforced DKD’s unique selling points and value.

#4 Newsletters

While our automated flows were designed to nurture and educate, our newsletter strategy was built around urgency and conversions. We tailored our newsletters around promotional and seasonal opportunities. Kitchen renovations are heavily influenced by seasonality, so we aligned our campaign content with key moments in the year when homeowners are most focused on their living spaces.

For a premium bespoke brand, heavy or constant discounting can damage brand perception. Instead of cheapening the product, we framed our promotional emails around “exclusive access” or “limited-time offers”.

We also elevated the newsletter design to match the high-end feel of the digital brochure, and keep a consistent through-line that matches the quality and service of the brand.

By implementing this, we successfully scaled the newsletter engagement from a baseline Click-Through Rate (CTR) of 0.4% to a peak CTR of 4.9%, showing an impressive 1,125% increase.
